...probably one of the best-known Americans outside of America (apart from movie stars,
athletes and politicians). But most Americans have never heard of him or his story.
His story could be anyone's - a man
defending his people against the force of a government intent on
silencing a growing voice of
resistance. Near the end of
the Civil Rights movement of the 60's and 70's, the FBI's Counter Intelligence
Program (COINTELPRO),
having successfully neutralized the powerful
Black Panther Party, focused its sights on and infiltrated the Americian Indian Movement (AIM);
what resulted was the death of two of their agents, and the death of an American
Indian.
Leonard Peltier, a Lakota-Ojibwa Indian, was accused and convicted of the murder of the
FBI agents, and is currently serving two consecutive life-terms in Leavenworth
prison. However, his extradition from Canada, and the trial itself are surrounded in
extreme controversy regarding the government's unethical and illegal crossing of
boundaries, compelling millions of people around the world to demand Leonard's freedom.
